Financial Controller

Muskoka Bay Resort, a part of the Freed Hotels and Resorts hospitality group is looking to add a Financial Controller to the team. As Financial Controller you’re responsible for directing the planning, controlling, reporting, and measuring of financial information and assets of the property. In this leadership position you will provide strategic direction and support to the accounting and resort leadership teams acting as the property’s strategic financial and business leader while ensuring adherence to established policies and controls. 

 

As Financial Controller, you will:

  • Oversee the daily activities of the accounting team (Accounting Manager, A/R, A/P, Cash, Payroll), providing leadership, coaching and support.

  • Define and maintain standards and compliance with all Freed Hotel and Resorts policies and procedures.

  • Provide guidance and support from business, finance, and risk management perspectives to the resort leadership team.

  • Oversee the preparation and distribution of daily reports (revenue, labour, etc) and corresponding reconciliations and journal entries.

  • Review and approve daily cashier reports and bank deposits.

  • Conduct weekly meetings with team members to complete a documented review of both A/R and A/P, in support of preparing the weekly Controller Flash Report.

  • Review and approve bi-monthly reconciliations for concessionaire business operations.

  • Review group contracts and credit applications for completeness, adherence to policy and to evaluate potential risk.  Approve credit within established guidelines.

  • Monitor cash-flow requirements and identify potential issues that may affect operations.

  • Oversee the month and quarter-end close process, ensuring completion of all month-end duties and Journal Entries within assigned deadlines.

  • Preparation of monthly financial statements and lead-schedules (balance sheet reconciliations) for review and approval within assigned deadlines.

  • Review of P&L statements for accuracy and coding irregularities, prior to distribution.

  • Prepare and present month-end reporting package.

  • Oversee preparation and review of quarterly SOX control samples.

  • Prepare the coming year’s operating and capital budgets.

  • Complete in collaboration with the team, year-end, including financial and compliance audit.

Our ideal candidate meets the following criteria:

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ progressive experience in accounting, preferably in a hospitality focused environment with at least two (2) years of management level experience.

  • Degree/Diploma in business, finance/accounting, or hospitality management.

  • Advanced level of proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft office products with ability to learn new technologies quickly.

  • Proficiency/exposure to standard hospitality technologies considered an asset.

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

  • Proven ability to lead the finance and accounting function while supporting and developing direct reports. 

  • Experienced within the hotel, resort and restaurant industry including knowledge of hotel/resort operations and their relation to the accounting function.

  • Experience with IFRS and SOX compliance would be considered an asset.
